What does the United States do in Cambodia? We create prosperity!
Thirty-six billion dollars! 144,000,000,000,000 riel! In either dollars or riel, that’s a ton of money! And that’s how much Cambodia has exported to the United States since 1997, 90 percent of which is garments and footwear.
Garments and footwear are Cambodia’s very first export industry. Today they employ approximately 700,000 very dedicated Cambodian workers. And America has helped the government build Cambodia’s garment industry every step of the way. Our 1996 trade agreement gave the industry its start. For 20 years, we have funded the Better Factories Program, which has given American and European buyers the confidence to source from Cambodia. More recently, we’ve worked with the government to set up the Arbitration Council, which peacefully resolves labor-management disputes. Cambodia’s world class garment industry gives the country a strong base to expand into higher technology manufacturing.
