The monastery is
a symbol of Buddhism and a way of life for the people of Cambodia. The
monastery is a quiet place for monks to stay in school, learn to pray and pray
at various religious festivals, where Buddhists also celebrate and pray.
Monasteries are also a store of knowledge of Buddhism and Khmer culture.
Buddhism and monks are highly respected in Cambodian society. Therefore,
respectful behaviors must be made and demonstrated at the same time. Whether
you go to a large or small pagodas, you need to remember and apply some rules
that refer to the reverence for Buddhism and the monks.
Here are some rules that you should be doing:
ü Take off shoes or hats before entering the
temples, especially the holy shrine.
ü Turn off the music player and your mobile
phone, or shut down (because of the noise), because these sounds can disrupt
the tranquility of the temples.
ü Avoid loud conversations or loudspeakers,
or use inappropriate words in temples.
ü Wear suitable clothing by wearing long
trousers or skirts with cosmetics that cover chest and shoulder, especially for
women. For Cambodians, wearing traditional clothes is suggested when entering a
monastery.
ü Avoid sitting taller
than monks
ü If the monk is sitting you have to sit still
before starting a conversation about something.
ü Women are not allowed to touch the monks
directly or directly to the monks, even the mothers of the monks.
